Ford 8n flathead v8 conversion

Is there a specific flathead v8 you needed to do the v8 conversion kit? I currently have a 59a flathead with the bellhousing thats part of the block. Im not sure if thats the one that works with it or if all of the styles work? The transmission in the ford 8n is the Sherman.

A Sherman is an aux add on transmission that sits in front of the stock transmission

Oh my bad haha. But again would that flathead engine mount up or was there a different block I needed?

Well since the Sherman sits in the Bell housing of the 8N that engine will not work since you need to use the 8N bell housing

would recommend contacting one of the suppliers of the conversion kits and ask, but from the pictures I have seen, I expect it needs to be a later block with out the integrated bell housing.

Yup, red rock manufacturing said that it should work with their
kit. Thanks for the info.

I have seen photos of N's where the engine with the integral bellhousing was used, but would definitely take some cutting and welding on the bellhousing. Not sure if they used the stock transmission input shaft, or in your case a Sherman, or something custom. Most conversions, included the Stauffer, Awesome Henry, Red Rock, and Funk use the later engines where the bellhousing bolts to the engine as that is easier to make an engine to transmission adaptor for. As for engines, the Ford 239 or Mercury 255 starting in 1949 are the most common engines used for a conversion. I suppose with more work the big 337 could be used, but the bolt pattern would be different than the 239. With enough time and work any motor could be bolted up. I have even seen an 8N with a Lincoln V12 bolted in.

Yea, Red rock has been the only company Ive found that still makes them that I know of and Ive been told their kit should work. Thank you for your advice

Ford Truck 7RT and Mercury 8CM I think I are same bell housing wise as Ford 8BA.

The flathead V8 you have won't bolt up to a kit as others have said. Have an adapter plate, frame and engine for a V6 if you have an interest. NJ 07838 Email is open
