my 8n is backfiring back through the carb and smoking will not run good at all unless choke is out it will start and will not run at high rpms checked the carb i think is a china one what does this sound like to everyone thanks for info Gary

Backfiring can be caused by a carb set or running to lean and having to choke it to make it run says the carb either needs to be adjusted or rebuilt or maybe both

Dirty carb. Anything that I ran into that had to be choked to run had plugged jets. A plugged main jet would keep it from running high rpm. I would say the carb needs to be disassembled and cleaned, and then readjusted after you put it back together.

Then again, I've never done anything with a Ford N series carb, so I am not familiar with them. Just going by what I've found with other carbs.
