ford 8n lubrication

First time ford 8n owner and need help. In the
operators manual it says 5/8 pint lubrication for
belt pulley, where do I find. Also in the tips for
8n it says to lubricate steering box at rt. side
above proofmeter. I see the same bolts on both
sides and I read that this is to adjust steering.
Any help accepted.

Someone will correct me if I am wrong but I believe the belt pulley you speaks of is an option to run a flat belt off the PTO to run a cordwood saw or some other equipment, so you probably don't have to worry about that.

Like Mr. Lembo pointed out, here's my belt pulley attachment
and thanks to you, now I know it probably holds 5/8 of a pint.
See the top of the filler plug on the end?

You're looking at the wrong bolts.

Re tip # 31, " Look on the right side of the steering box, just above the proofmeter. Remove the bolt and stick a piece of wire with a "J" hook o the end in the bolt hole. Depending on the model of year steering box, you will find the hole going into the steering box."

See the bolt in the pic where the battery cable is attached? Use the bolt in the same place on the right side.

But be aware, your model steering box may not have that hole.

See the brass pipe above the battery cable? That's the filler neck I install in all my 8N's when I re-do the steering boxes. Drill through the dash support, remove the pipe plug in the box & install the brass pipe.

Do not use grease in the box, no matter what variety. Replace the seals & use oil.

Oil is OK if you completely rebuild the steering box with new bushings, seals and may be even the pitman shafts if they are badly worn.

I always have used grease since the early 60s when I learned that old steering boxes leak at the seals and grease does not.

It doesn't have to leak but a little to starve the top thrust bearing and cause it to fail.

Yea, Ford even recommended grease. But I've seen the results of grease in A Model steering boxes & figured that the N design was similar enough to get the same results: the gear action pushes the grease out & you get no lube to the contact surfaces.

I've only rebuilt about 5 steering boxes on 8N's, so I don't have a lot of experience on the topic, but none of them leak & all use oil.
