Ford 8n problem

my ford 8n wouldnt start put new carb on it, it will start but with choke out, if i push choke leaver in it will backfire and smoke and quit some smoke looks like it may be from exaust manifold any suggestions as to why/ thanks for all

Back fire is either a timing issue or it is running to lean.

What is condition of manifold/gasket/mating head surface. Might have a leak.

If it runs on choke suggests too lean/leak someplace.

Save the old carb........

Gary, you've been on here for a long time. What caused you to put a new carburetor on it because it wouldn't start? Is there some history with your old carburetor?
Did you check for a good strong spark at the plugs? A weak spark needs a richer mixture to run, thus pulling the choke.
