ford 8n shifter boot

I am restoring my 8n and having trouble getting the shifter boot on, please help. Thanks

dmort ,Boil a pan of water ,drop the boot in and carry the pan to the tractor.Put on some gloves,fish it out with pliers Squirt some dish soap inside of it and slip it on the shifter.

Turn in inside out and roll it on.

It shouldn't just 'slip right on'. I want mine good and tight so there is no chance of water getting in.
I used some Vaseline and elbow grease to get mine on.

The cheap ones are thin and tight but do not last for very long . The good ones are thicker , slip on fairly easy , and last a long time . At least the ones I have seen

hot water and soap always worked best for me.

i agree, slightly warm and soap or grease makes it pop right on, tight or not.

Bought one from YT and it went right on without issue, still tight and no cracks.

I don't think that is the source of water in a tranny , but you can pull up on the shifter with little effort and compromise the integrity of the seal . A hard shift may also cause one side to break open . Still that's not the water source .

I solved that problem by buying the wrong one. I think it was for an International. It fit perfectly and went on with no boiling, stretching, or soaping.
