For one thing, the 8N has four forward speeds and position control for the 3 point lift. It also has both brake pedals on the right side.

Do you have 8 lug nuts on the rear wheel that are 7 3/4" bolt circle?

Or does it have 6 bolts that hold the rear wheel to the axle that are about 15 1/2" bolt circle?

Once again let me stress to you newbies (and a few oldies) to forget about serial numbers; they mean relatively nothing unless you have an early 1939 9N or an early 1948 8N you are going to restore to all original. Forget about the STAR and DIAMOND SYMBOLS in the serial numbers as they too mean nothing today. Steel cylinder sleeves once used and were designated with a STAR prefix and suffix in the s/n are no longer made and used; cylinder liners are now all made of cast iron. In 1950, FORD switched to cast iron sleeves and all s/n's now were designated as such with a diamond symbol fore and aft the s/n. FWIW, N-Series Tractor Serial Numbers were hand stamped on the engine block near the oil filter housing as pictured and no where else. Guys see an '8N' with a number on a casting part and assume it is their serial number. All 9N & 2N models had the 9N prefix in the serial numbers; there was no such thing as a 2N stamped s/n. ALL 8Ns used the '8N' prefix code in the s/n. You do need to know the important details on how to ID a model number. ALL 9N & 2N models have a 3-Speed Transmission and use DRAFT CONTROL only and were produced from 1939 thru 1946 to begin with. Many parts and systems were revamped over the years and then in July, 1947, the new 8N Model was released as the 1948 8N Model. It now used a 4-SPD Trans, a new electrical system, new steering box, new wheels, new hydraulic system that now had POSITION CONTROL on the 3-PT Lift to name some of the major changes. ALL N-SERIES tractors used the front mount distributor from 1939 thru early 1950. ALL FORD vehicles (not just tractors) used the 6V/POS GRN electrical system until the late 1950's when the Hundred Series diesel tractors were introduced. However, know that many N's and others have been switched over to a 12V/NEG GRN system and work equally well. You can find out more on FORD TRACTOR ID & History at the LINK below. I highly advise you determine what model you have and invest in the ESSENTIAL MANUALS if ya wanna be an N Owner.
