Ford 930a finish mower

I keep having a problem with the rear blade pulley. The pulley is cast with a steel sheave in the center held together with two 1/4-20 bolts. I keep shearing the bolts and the two parts eat each other up in no time flat. I even went to grade 8 bolts and it does the same thing. I would like to junk this pulley style and use a pulley with a regular 3/4 shaft hole in the center. I'm really tired of it breaking down on me. Replacement pulley and sheave are expensive. 1) why is this happening and 2) has anyone changed this out? Where can I get a normal pulley for this?

The 930A was made by Woods for Ford. That is a Browning style pulley, and the bore of the pulley, and the OD of the sleeve are tapered. You shouldn't need to tighten the bolts till the sleeve bottoms on the pulley. It that is happening, then it is time for a new pulley and sleeve. Bolts shouldn't need to be any better than grade five. It makes them much harder to get apart, but do not lube between the sleeve and the pulley.

After posting, I got to thinking that if your shaft is below limits then the taper won't be able to squeeze onto it. Also check for slop in the keyway on the shaft. We sold tons of those units, so check with your local dealer he may have an old operators manual to buy.

Taper Lock pullies are a very good design and cost more to use than a conventional one piece pulley. Your results indicate a problem with
either the shaft, a component of the pulley, or your techniques.

What is a Browning style pulley? Never heard that terminology used before. Are you meaning a tapered hub sheave? Not trying to be a smart a**. Just asking.
