I have a ford 960 tractor and the hydraulic pump is making a
light chatter sound. We have replaced the timing gears as well
as the gear on the back of cam shaft and that helped but still
has a little noise. I have also replaced the bearing on the
inside of the pump as well as the needle bearing. It has a
piston pump. I hoping someone has another idea. Also the
sound goes away as the three point is raising. Thanks

How sloppy is the pump drive gear? The noise goes away because you take all the slop out of something in the drive line. I had a so-called uncle that swapped his bad motor into one of our tractors while he was using it. I believe it was the same motor he tried to get me to adjust the valves on it for him. Funny thing was I couldn't adjust the valves because I suddenly got all confused, handed him the manual and said I couldn't do it. Now I've never had any trouble adjusting valves on any motor and still don't except for that one time. I believe that's the motor he swapped into our tractor because it was making that rattling sound. It wasn't the valves, it was a worn out motor that I thought had a bad gear on the pump. After swapping pumps it still had the rattle so I pulled the pump again as I thought it maybe had a loose pump driving cam gear at the back. No loose bolts so I started pying on the gear with a large screwdriver and the cam gear that was bolted firmly to the cam would wiggle up and down at least an 1/8". Either it was a worn block as they don't have cam bearings or it was a wornout camshaft. The slop was there. I hope that's not your problem as the pump driven gear just slips on it's shaft. I know that some remotes have some valves that do not automatically kick off when loaded and they will wear the dickens out of the crank, camshaft and pump gears. I was round baling with a NH 850 chain baler when I discovered all that and started hearing the pump gear rattling. Ask me how I know. I put a pressure light on any circuit that doesn't unload by itself now.

Jacob. Have you checked the backlash on the pump when installed? Mine was making just a light chattering or clicking sound and at the advice of other users on here, I doubled up the pump to block gasket. Perfect. No noise at all. Service manual even suggests using a shim if necessary.

I know this was an old thread, but I have the same problem with a noisy hydraulic pump. I've changed timing gears, rebuilt the hydraulic pump. Put a pump drive gear on the back of the camshaft. It's still loud. I did take the gasket out of the pump to motor mount to eliminate any backlash play. The chatter is still there. Perhaps now I don't have enough backlash. But the noise was there when I had a little backlash. I even tried a different pump. Camshaft bearings seemed to have no play. I'm pretty much at the end of thinking I can ever quiet it down. Running Travelers Universal Hydraulic/Transmission oil. Do you know how much backlash the pump should have if any? Or perhaps I could try running a thicker oil?
Thank you for your time.

You took the gasket, this fellow said he ADDED a thicker gasket to solve the problem

Yes, I took the gasket out and sealed it with RTV to eliminate the backlash. But still noisy, so I'll try adding gaskets. It sounds like it worked for Tom. Thank you. I appreciate your reply.
