Ford 9600 engine oil

On my 9600 Ford tractor the book calls for SAE 30 engine oil. The New Holland dealer told me to use Ambra Mastergold HSP multigrade engine oil SAE 15w-40. They said they use the 15w-40 in all the engines they service. Does anyone have any advice on switching to the 15w-40 or should I stay with the SAE 30. Thanks

book called for straight weight oils back then for each season, and varying work loads, now it is easier to use a multigrade oil and run yearround without having to get the heavy oil out when it gets coldout or having to put it back in when you want to work er in the spring. no problem with switching as long as it is good quality oil used.

boy oh boy, has oil changed...

use only a HD diesel motor oil like chevron delo, shell rotella, or mobil delvac, mystic oil and others.. you can get a 15w-40 designed for heavy duty use in diesel engines that has been designed to make diesel truck engines run for up to a million miles and more between overhauls.. These oils are far far superior to 30w oils and have the preferred oil for 30 years plus... wallmart, truck stops and autoparts will all carry these oils in one gallon containers as well as 5 gallon containers. A more expensive 5w-40 hd diesel oil can be used as well but usually only if your doing lots of snowplowing and running in cold and freezing weather. These oils perform better in the artic and cold regions for winter use. However most tractors are not used when the temps are that cold. hope this helps.. bill

We have used 15W-40 in our 8700 for as long as I can remember.

The main reason why multi-grades were not recommended in the past is due to the polymers they use. They tend to leave residue on piston rings. The new oils are not all that "superior" but they do give year-round protection. You can ruin an engine with 30W if you start it at 20 below zero.

Some of the new multi-grade diesel oils don't use polymers anymore -especially synthetic diesel oils.

Straight 30W is still recommended as the best in some diesel engines in warmer temps. Detroit Diesel two-stroke diesels still do not allow multi-grade oils.

Main issue now is more about anti-wear ingredients. Most HD diesel motor oils sold now for highway use have taken out or lowered some of the most important antiwear ingredients that older tractors need (ZDDP).

Main rule-of-thumb is - does your tractor have a flat-lifter cam or a roller cam? Any flat-lifter cam engine needs the extra anti-wear additives that are NO longer in Shell Rotella T. You need an off-road HD oil - and there are plenty around.
