Ford 9600 pto leaking

I have a ford 9600 the pto started leaking can I just take out the 4
bolts and pull the cover off and replace the seal or do I have to
remove pto shaft too

You can remove just the cover. That said, leave the shaft in place and make sure the guts don't come out with the cover, or else parts will start dropping into the bottom of the case.

PTO guts

So as long as the pto shaft does come out I will be fine

If the gears bern is talking about do drop, they can easily be picked up with the end of the shaft and put back in place. You'll need to check the hub and bearing for wear. The rear housing has a separate oil fill also.

If the gears drop down, most likely at least one of the thrust washers has dropped to the bottom as well. Can't pick that up with the shaft.

Yes, keep the shaft and snap ring in place by holding forward pressure on the shaft as you pry the housing off. This might be a two-person job, because that housing doesn't just slide right off - it will take a little coaxing.

No argument there. If the thrust washers fall then the bottom cover has to come off. The experience I've had is the oil sticks the thrust washers in place.

Should the pto shaft have slight movement back and fourth or is the movement because of the bad seal I have ford 7000 and it does not have any movement still new to still this tractor and farming

It is normal for that style of PTO shaft to have a little bit of end play when everything is together. The seal has nothing to do with it.

If your 7000 has a single speed PTO, then there will be no end play.
