Ok I know all you guys know alot about fords so here go"s. I am working on a 961 ford with the 2 stage clutch. the clutch will not disingage the pto works fine. ok so I tore this thing all apart, and found nothing wrong except the drive clutch was worn down, so I replaced that put it all back together an it is still not realeasing. the only thing I see that dus not make sence is that the pto disingages before the drive clutch, I have the top off and can see the clutch and throughout bearing and it seams to be working fine. any hel or tip here would be greatly appreciated. because I am about to the point of rolling this thing out in the field and shooting it full of holes

If the PTO disengages before the transmission does you have serious problems. I cannot even imagine how that is possible.
How did you replace the drive clutch? It is my understanding that the use of a special jig is required to assemble this clutch
I would say that it is time for you to invest in a complete professional clutch rebuild.

If I am following the discription of your problem correctly. Your top preasure plate is not very good. If you can not shorten up the turnbuckle on the clutch rod short enough to stop the PTO clutch, the pins and pin holes are wore real bad. I'd like to know how you got the double clutch back together and the tractor rolled back together without using the special double clutch jig. If you had set this clutch up on the jig before installing it in the tractor,. you would have caught this and any other problems that might exist .

I would also like to point out that the tractors clutch would not relese befor I tore it apart, even though the disk was worn down past the rivets

It's not too hard to figure out. Your clutch assembly needs to be adjusted by a shop with the proper fixture.

As you probably know, free play decreases as your clutch wears. Somebody probably adjusted the clutch to compensate for the worn-out transmission clutch, rather than spring for the money to fix it right. When you replaced the transmission clutch disk, all of the sudden you have all that free play back. Now, instead of the transmission clutch disengaging before the PTO, it's the other way around.

Do you have the three pins in that attach the the three ground drive clutch fingers to the back plate , the plate the has the spring anchor pins in it? This plate has to drop into the flywheel to release the traction clutch.(A thought) You didn't per chance pull the tractor together with bolts,or have a lot of trouble rolling it together, since, I assume, you didn't have a jug to center the clutch. That could warp the clutch disc and it will never release in that condition.

While I only have limited knowledge to tap into when it comes to Ford double clutch setup here goes...........

Adjusting the pedal rod does not adjust the clutch. It only adjust the free play travel. Very simular to a big truck clutch you need to adjust the clutch by setting the fingers at the correct heigth. This requires a special tool.

Think of this clutch as 2 seperate clutches. 3 fingers operate the drive clutch by pulling the center plate away from the drive disc; and the other 3 fingers operate the PTO clutch by pulling the PTO plate away from the PTO disc.

Your problem is most likely that your drive fingers; springs; plate are not adjusted right or bad.

I had no problem getting the tractor back together, actuly is was way easyer than it should have been, yes the pins are in the back corectly, and yes I have ajusted the fingers on the pressure plate

How did you adjust the fingers on the pressure plate? Did you or the shop that set it up have access to the appropriate fixture?

Ok I assume that the fixture is for compressing the springs and centering the disks, how dus that aid in clutch ajustment. all I can see that you need is a 7/16 wrench and a good ruler??

Do you have the drive clutch facing the right way? The hub of the tranny clutch should be towards the engine. The PTO clutch should face the transmission. If was smart enough to post pictures. Maybe this afternoon.!! I have pictures from the shop manual to show how the jig works. I also have the jig!!

The fixture is used both to align the clutch disks and to adjust the fingers. I'm not aware of any alternate way other than how it's shown in the Ford shop manual.

By now, I'm sure you realize you'll have to split the tractor and take the clutch assembly to a shop that regularly works on them.
