rebuilt motor completely.... sleeves pistons
electronic 6 volt pertronix.... when starting the
starter wants to disengage b4 it starts.. you can
hear it try to fire but the starter
disengages....what do u think? timing too
advanced?
also cant make it idle... rebuilt carb twice
now... runs like there is a vacuum leak at idle...
(cover carb with hand engine speeds up) NOTE: it
did this before i rebuilt engine too!! replaced
manifold when the motor was rebuilt. air screw is
all way in to make it idle. but its still
rough...(wish i had another carb ...when i rebuilt
my uncles 8n it ran perfect after)

Sounds to me like the gasket, between the carb bowl & throttle body, is suckin' air into the carb. If those mating surfaces are not pristine clean, and have NO chips, cracks, and or bad gasket seal, then you will have a problem with the Idle air adjusting screw!!!!! Air to fuel mix will NOT be right, thus the engine will not run properly.
ONE ? for you???????........Where is it that, when you place yer hand on the carb....the engine wants to idle faster??????
Where ever that area is,.....that's where the carb is suckin' air!!!!!!
Air to fuel mix is critical, for proper engine running!!!!

May even be a crack in the carb bowl somewhere, but where ever it is,.....the carb is getting too much air!!!!!! Thus the idle air adj, having to be turned all the way in to run!!!!

If ya need more help with this....shoot me an email, and I will help ya out!!!
Email is always open on the Modern side of the forum, at the bottom of this reply!!!!

If the bendix disengages before the engine starts, you could have a bad bendix, but you most likely have a poorly tuned engine. It works like this......the bendix engages the ring gear on the flywheel & turns the engine over. When the engine speed exceeds the design speed of the bendix (because the engine is running) it disengages. (and I can never remember what RPM that is). Your engine fires before it reaches optimum RPM's & disengages the bendix.

Problem #1 is that you have installed electronic ignition on a 6v tractor. did the manufacturer tell you it won't fire below 5.2 volts? If you have a weak battery, poor grounds/cables or even a slightly dragging starter, you get a low voltage condition & a weak spark.

As to timing, well, once again, you put an electronic ignition on a front mount; to the best of my knowledge, you can't time it conventionally once that's done. Call Pertonix & ask them how to time it.

GB has given you great info on the carb. A dirty or leaking carb is adding to the problem.

IMHO.....put the points back in it, repair the carb & get it running. Then, re-install the EI.

well spring is here...... still hard to start.... still cant find anything wrong with carb.... tried [b:21bcdaa0b3]old [/b:21bcdaa0b3]coil on the new elec ign but couldnt leave it on to check the hard start as it dies when it gets warm.
anyone think it could be a bad coil? (the new coil i mean .....)
i have replaced the wire thru the ignition switch to the ignitor and rechecked the ground from the top of the coil. [/u]

There are a few folks here who claim that EI is infallible. But, it's unlikely that they will be offering you any help, so I'll try.

Re-read my post to you in October.

You have an EI on a 6v system. Once your battery gets below 5.2 volts, it won't fire.

Fully charge the battery & clean all the posts & grounds.

Mare sure you have battery voltage to the top of the coil when it shuts off.

If that doesn't work, post back & start a new thread. There are others here who can troubleshoot EI much better than I can.
