Ford industrial engine

I am trying to confirm an engine casting code off of an industrial engine. I have been looking in the archives and have found conflicting information that this is a 172 or a 192. Would anyone be able to help with this?

Thank you.

Thank you.

I'm pretty sure it's a 172.

Came from a sprayer. I saw that in the archives some said 172 and some said 192. Is it possible the casting was both? Short of tearing it apart to measure the bore how can I tell?
Thank for the replies.

Hello Jason , According to Ford Industrial Division casting number lists that I have , you have a 172 gas . I have not had one apart to confirm for sure but my lists have not been wrong yet . I can confirm every 192 gas or diesel that I have had apart has been a C or K block with many different prefixs . Thanks Tony

Hello Kirk , Have you had that engine apart before ? It is also a 172 according to Ford but it does not mean it was not bored out for 192 pistons at a later date . Many later castings can go both ways Diesel or Gas and 172 or 192 before machining because the castings are much heavier than the earlier tractor engines . Thanks Tony

Hi Tony,
I have not had that engine apart. One reason I said it was a 192 was because on the valve cover it has the ford industrial 192 tag on it. Could the cover been changed? sure. Could the engine have been done over? sure. I guess I won't know unless I open it up. I won't be ordering any parts until I do so.
Thanks for the info on the C&K blocks being 192's at least I have a couple of those.

Kirk

I would go with what Tony,he know quite a bit about the ford instrials and john smith on this one. My reasons for my 192 are explained below. I did not intend to mislead you.

Kirk

Hello Kirk , I would definately open it up before you order parts if you ever have to , it could have been short blocked(under warranty or just at a dealer) at one time too . I have sonic tested quite a few of these blocks in the past and they have thick cylinder walls generally so it is possible it was bored at the factory if there was a shortage of the C and K blocks at the time . Thanks Tony
