Ford Medium Grey?

Have all my pie weight segments, mounting plates, front weight box and weights ready for primer and paint. I bought the Ford Grey but the PO of my 961 used more of an off white. The Ford Grey Rustoleum I bought is considerably a darker shade. I've been researching some and found there is a Medium Ford grey that was used on later tractors. Is this what I might have on mine? I really don't want to repaint the whole tractor, just want to get something to match for my weights. Hoping they didn't mix up something on they're own. Thanks!

Your question will probably generate quite
the discussion but I like the grey in your
picture because it looks very similar (in
my opinion) to this Ford advertising
brochure:

I'm no expert, but that looks a lot like the Ford Gray 1965-1994 shade to me. When I worked at the dealer we always called
it gray gloss. It goes on almost looking a little tan, but whitens up as it dries.

I don't think it's the medium gray for the xx1 series, seems way too light.
CNH med.medium gray for XX1s does have that tan-ish tint to it and in some lighting almost green-ish tint.
I just sprayed these yesterday, 2nd coat on the medium gray....
Yours might be a light gray from vansickel...maybe...

There was never more than one Ford Medium Grey paint --- p/n M-13243 ad used from the first 8N model in 1947 until 1964 models. It was when Ford went to the Empire Blue and off-white scheme that things changed. Try TISCO TP-240 for closest match. CNH used to make a good match but they don't make squat anymore for old Fords. Heck, even their (CNH) Ford Red says ...FORD ROUGE RED, used from 1939 - 1962... . They also do not make a FORD 9N Dark Grey now either. The new CNH paint says Made In the USA but doesn't say by who or where. One thing is certain, it isn't like their old paint. VALSPAR is a good brand too. Don't waste time or money on the MAJIC junk.

I agree with Tim on the majic junk, however in 58 for the XX1 series both the red and the medium gray changed.
CNH medium gray is # 957, the red/orange is # 956 I'm using both and very happy with them.
The dates they put on their cans are incorrect for when those colors were used so no big deal...
Ford is now New Holland and they are as close as I'll be able to get to the ever elusive " correct colors "
And that's good enough for me, so all that needs to be figured out is what brand and color was used on your 961 to avoid a huge mismatch....
Best of luck to you, remember.. if your happy with it then it's fine :D

Tom, there has been a LOT of discussion about this on the paint forum lately. As tugman said there was the early dark gray up until '48, then the medium gray up to Oct. 1957 when they started painting the XX1s. That went until 1964 when they went to the off white and blue "world tractors". Your's looks like the '64 and on white. Tisco has tried to simplify it and cut their costs by trying to sell a "one size fits all" gray, but hardly anyone is buying it. The later gray on the XX1s to me has a slight yellow-tan to it. I was tipped off to the difference when I bought my 961. The PO had painted it the off white, but he had something attached to the right fender when he did it, so that there was this patch of very different original gray still there. I was able to clean up the underside of the hood and get it digitally reproduced. When you line them up there is a very noticeable difference between them.

The link below takes you to a 961 that
most likely was never repainted. If you
scroll through the pictures, especially
wheels and fenders, I don't see a darker
or tannish grey, rather the the same grey
used on previous generations of Ford
tractors. I can see that the red changed
to more orangy. Just food for thought,
not trying to be argumentative.

Andy, it appears that you may not be familiar with "colorizing" That is a printing process that was used before color photography. Colors were printed onto black and white photos, usually no more than two colors, so there was no such thing as shades of colors. Colors were just coincidental in appearance to the actual subject in the B&W photo.

You already bought the rustoleum grey so just buy the rustoleum can of white and in small amounts mix to make the shade lighter.

Hello Tim, do you have the p/n for Ford red that was used on Jubilees ? I'm gonna try p/n M-12343 for the gray. Do you know if the Jubilee fuel tanks were galvanized or painted? Thank you

I thought that the early Ford fuel tanks were galvanized before the three cylinders came out.

My current tank is paintet red. I was told by a restoration guy that the tanks were originally galvanized. It's not as easy as you'd think to get an exact answer. LOL

uuug... she has painted lug nuts.. meaning she is a lady of the night... NO self respecting tractor would be caught dead with lipstick and painted nails... Front bumper also is showing its underwear. poor tractor. Sorry, its got a lot of time and quality otherwise. Just not a fan of the other. You can always take a sample to the paint store to get a match on the white/light grey. With the weights on her, she will really work for you and get all the power to the ground. Just be careful on steep slopes.

You want Vermillion and yes light gray. Where are you planning to get it? CNH has discontinued all but the latest of the old colors. Here are mixing specs:

I get Nason 2K urethane from a local auto supply
