Ford NAA freeze plug

Hello all, I've got a question. How do you remove and replace the bottom rear freeze plug that is partially covered by the transmission housing? Is there a way to do this without splitting the tractor? Thanks

yes. dig it out with a screw driver. you may have to bend one into a hook to pop it out but you can remove it. to install you will
need to build a tool similar to this to drive in the new plug. PS I got about a half a pint of sand/radiator stop leak stuff out
while flushing the system with the plugs out. finally check your work with a cat scan

I replaced my bottom rear freeze plug with a rubber-adjustable one.

I removed the face washer from the plug, due to the interference with the transmission.

I put the plug in the hole, partially, bottom of the plug in the hole, top would not go in because it was at an angle, due to the transmission interference.

I used a wide chisel and a hammer to persuade the rubber into the block, took about 5 whacks, the rubber slowly assumed the right position. I used the hammer to drive the washer in between the rubber and the transmission. When it aligned with the screw of the plug, i used a screw driver to push the washer far enough into the compressed rubber that I could engage the nut ....

Tightened the nut, filled the radiator, ran the tractor, no leakage!

Saved the day in the tractor shop

I replaced all 4 on my 53 NAA. getting out no problem as the were paper thin and a 45 needle nose vise grip pulled them right out. Make sure to clean the seats with a light sandpaper polish so the new freeze plugs will seat to a clean surface. I used the old Indian Head gasket sealer to provide some lube while installing the new plugs, plus helps seal any uneven areas. I used a small wide blade screw driver held against the plug rim and gently tapped the blade, not the inner part of the seal. All went in very easy, including the bad one that the tranny partially blocked. Made sure it was well lined up before trying to tap in.
