Dyock

New User
I have a 1953 Ford NAA. When I try to accelerate when it is under a load the engine surges (pulses) for a few seconds and then seems to smooth out. I am thinking carburetor adjustment but not sure.

Dyock.......keep yer ittchy-twitchy fingers off'n them handy-dandy carb tweek-ums. They aint'chur problem. Its yer GOVERNOR. Need to be rebuilt. .......Dell

first, check fuel flow just for the heck of it. probablyt ok., but want to rule out a lean condition caused by inadequate flow.

if flow is ok, stand by tractor and goos the throttle a few times. any stumbling? If so, try enriching the mian needle 1/8 a turn and test again.

have you ever inspected the advance mechanism?

Thanks soundguy. No I haven't checked the advance mechanism. Not sure where to start with that. I will check the fuel flow before I mess with the carb.

I think Dell may be right. Mine did this too and was due to my balls being worn and flat on four sides, more square then round. Nothing that a kit can"t fix. It"s fairly easy to to pull your governor and check the balls.

and it surely could be the governor as dell mentioned. those ar ethe things I would check when they act like that. .. fuel flow, and then check for stumbling.. this also tells you about the gov if it fights you a bit.. lastly timing and advance.

Checked the fuel flow and it was good so I thought what the heck what's a 1/8" turn on the main I can always turn it back. Brush hoged for 1 1/2hrs. it did show a little surge one time when I was finishing up but much better.
Thanks!

now.. that might just be a temperature / environmental change and the carb needed tweaking.. or could be a sign of a lil crud inthe carb. if you have to keep enriching it as the months pass.. then you will need to rebuild.

if 1/8 turn took out 95% of the surge.. go ahead and give it another 32nd or 16th and see if that kills it completely, without making it puff a plume of black smoke or flood and gurrgle when you goose the throttle real fast.
