Not really an antique question, but someone here should know. What do the TN TS TC etc stand for in the NH tractors model numbers? thanks, Doug.

I can only guess that TC means Tractor Compact, and TG is Tractor Genesis. Beyond that, I have not a clue.

Wow... I just tried to look up to see all of the tractor brands that Fiat now owns, and I stumbled on this page:

Which says:

So it looks like New Holland no longer equals Fiat. The parent company is now CNH Industrial. And they own the following agricultural/tractor product brands:

Case IH
Steyr
New Holland Agriculture

Plus the following Construction equipment brands:

Case Construction
New Holland Construction

Plus these other truck, bus and other types of vehicle brands:
IVECO
IVECO Astra
IVECO Bus
Heuliez Bus
Magirus

As well as FPT Industrial , which specializes in the design, production and sale of propulsion and transmission systems for on- and off-road trucks and commercial vehicles, as well as engines for marine application and power generation.

So who do you think holds a controlling interest in CNH Industrial? It's just another corporate layer insulating the Ag/ Industrial/ Heavy truck components from Fiat.

I don't doubt that they kept a controlling interest, but the new CNH Industrial is its own company with its own publically traded stock, and I assume that the majority shareholder is Fiat itself, but that leads to another reason why large holding companies do this sort of thing, which is that it isolates the parent company from liabilities that the controlled company might encounter. Like if someone sued CNH Industrial and they lost so much that they had to liquidate the company, Fiat itself couldn't be touched, and as a shareholder they would get their share of any money left over after the liquidation.

Maximizing profit and minimizing liability are the 2 major motivators for corporate bloodsuckers... , er.. I mean executives, these days. Unlike the old fashioned business ethic of a fair product for a fair price and everyone benefits.

The new stock symbol is CNHI and is primarily listed on the NY Stock exchange. Increasing profitability and reducing liability and cost is important, but I think a lot of this slicing and dicing of companies is often done in an attempt to increase stock prices of the parts over the previous whole. I am sure the large banks encourage it also since they get their slice when the operations are combined or split or reorganized.
Their profit margin at 2.94% is less than a third of Deere and a little more than half of AGCO (despite their prices).

CNH has always been a publically traded company since it's inception. One which the Agnelli family has held a controlling interest either directly or through Fiat in which they hold a controlling interest. Their strategies often revolve around floating stock for cash when they wish to make acquisitions or simply need cash... and then they reabsorb the stock at a time that is more opportune to them.
Big headline here is 'no news here'.

I thought... when you go back in time... those letters had something to do with Greek words. T was obviously for tractor... but I think 'G' was for Gamma, GMA was Gamma Alta Medium... or some such thing... and so on. I don't know what they all mean by any stretch.

If I remember correctly, TN=tractor narrow
TC=tractor compact, TS=tractor small, TL=tractor large, TM=tractor medium, TK=tractor crawler, at least that is what I remember from school when they changed to the letter system some years back.

Thanks. Makes sense . Life was sure simpler when all you had to remember was JD A B, IH H M, FORD 8N etc.

Try keeping up with the model number changes as a tech, as soon as you get them figured out they change them. The "T" series at least gave you the engine horse power in the model, made sense, I guess that is why they had to change them, hahaha.
