All,

I bought paint for a couple 1958-1962 Fords from a couple different sources. I received two different color grays. My understanding is that it should be "Ford medium gray" it looks too dark and almost olive green. The bother is. "Ford light gray" but doesn't have a hint now tan which is how I believe it should be. Which correct or neither? Pic shows them side by side. Greenish is Van Sickle.

Your medium gray is correct for your 58-62. The light gray is correct for 1964 to somewhere around 1975. When our old Fords were being built, They replaced the original 9N dark gray with light gray in 1948. It was used up until late 1957, when it was replaced with medium gray. Somewhere around five years ago it appears that CNH decided to consolidate the old colors and go with just the ones that came out in 1957, along with the later light gray which of course still sells well. If you own a 1948 to 1957 Ford you are supposed to be happy with the new colors.

So I did an AI search just for kicks. My serial number is 661 157820. There are some areas where there is blue paint on this tractor. This is what the AI search came back with:

What color was an original 1962 Ford 661 seat

For the 1962 Ford 661 Workmaster tractor, the original seat color and the overall paint scheme underwent a significant transition during that production year.

Original Seat Color

The color of an original 1962 Ford 661 seat depends on whether it was an "early" or "late" 1962 model:

Early 1962 Red Followed the "Workmaster" 601 series styling (Red and Light Gray).
Late 1962 Blue Transitioned to the "Thousand Series" (2000/4000) styling (Blue and Gray).

Dad bought a 56 model 860 in 62 that had a black seat
My 62 model 881 was original red and gray with black seat
I don’t believe I even seen a 8N/pre 65 Ford tractor that hadn’t been repainted with a seat other than black
