ford sos pto cable

I just bought a ford 2000 sos and the pto cable was already removed from the hood. All that is there is what looks like a steel brake line with a cable inside and
there is a part on the end that would come through the dash. The cable seemed stuck and I lubed it up got it to spin inside the steel tube. I have a manual for a
newer 2000 but my tractor is an older 2000. I have a new manual on order. One thing that is missing is the t handle that goes on the end. I read in the newer
manual to unscrew the cable from the transmission which I did. But now the slider that goes through the dash also unscrewed off the cable. Is it supposed to
unscrew or is this thing toast. The cable is just a cable with a spring coiled around it and it seems fine. It doesnt look broken. It just unscrewed on both ends
I believe. I guess you cant buy these cables any more.

The cable was never designed to thread out of the handle end - I believe it was crimped from the factory. Possibly you could drill out the end of the handle and re-crimp the cable back in there? Or weld it somehow?

If you unscrewed cable out of trans cover youre pulling trans cover to get back in. GET the book before going any farther!!!!

The book is on order but thats how the newer book said to get the cable out.

Yes, it is supposed to be able to be unscrewed from the transmission. See if the handle end will screw back into the sliding part. I had one once that did that. The crimp had just come loose and the threads were still good so I just rethreaded the cable back in as far as I could get it and then carefully recrimped the assembly with a vicegrips.

Thanks for the reply. I am waiting on the manual but I think I can get it thread back in there somehow. If not I think I could drill it out a little and then epoxy it something. Do you know if it will hurt to start and drive the tractor without the pto cable being in the transmission. I wanted to drive it down by the pressure washer and hose it off. I would plug the hole in the transmission cover.

As long as the valve is all the way off you should be fine. I'd just screw the cable in by itself and make sure it's all the way down so the valve isn't in the feathering position.
