Is it possible to remove the column without lifting the cab on a 79 5600? Someone cross threaded all 4 bolts into the housing causing the column to move side to side when steering. I’ve tried lifting up on it but it just hits the tank. Are there any secrets to getting this thing out?

Unfortunately the bottom of that casting protrudes downwards about 3 inches, meaning the the back of the tank will at least have to tip upwards a little bit to get that thing out. I do not envy you, at all.

You happen to know the size of bolts and is it just the bolts that hold it down? I stumbled across one picture that looked like it had some brackets with the bolts.

Just 4 bolts hold it down, while 2 dowels keep it located. I'm sure the dowels are either long gone or badly battered.

As you can see, they are 9/16 NC x approx 1-1/2" long (the book shows 2 different lengths for some odd reason). The only brackets used would be #54-56. They were there to retain a wrap-around shield (#57) on less-cab tractors, a shield you do not have. The brackets have nothing to do with holding down the box.
