Ford tractor

Model BA4C4D:

BA4 is a 2910
Next character C is not valid according to my references. It should be a number, 1,2 5 or 6. 1 & 5 say that it has a diesel engine, while 2 & 6 are for a gasoline engine.

The 4 in the 5th position says that it has independent 540 rpm PTO.

The D in the last position says that it has an 8x4 synchronized transmission.

Unit Number 7K15B says that it was assembled on October 15 1987 during the day shift.

4th letter in model # is very clearly a C. Trac has 3 hyd, with levers & valves behind seat? hydraulic lift-7K15A

wondering if it not an emmisionized diesel?? 1983- to 1990 Maybe the later models had the modified injector pumps... wild as guess on my part.

Sean, this is from the model decode reference that you once posted. There are some letters for specific displacements. C is missing but I wonder if it means 175 CID as in a 2910.

I think I want to change my comments on the engine code to ''I don't know''. There doesn't seem to be a good reference on the web for tractors from the mid-late 80s and beyond, at least I haven't found one. Apparently the plant code (letters in the serial number) for the 2910 can be C (US), BA, BB, or BC in chronological sequence. I've not seen an explanation of dual letters. Also I speculated that a C engine code might indicate displacement. Now I'm not sure, if I look at the engine code for my 1994 455D which is P the engine is a 201 not a 192 as from Sean's reference.

Below is a data plate from a US manufactured 2910 that I found on tractorhouse. It decodes as expected with a 1 engine code.

So in short I think someone needs to find and post a good reference for later-model and foreign-plant Fords.

Tractordate does not have all possible serial number ranges listed. Plant codes could have been A for the Antwerp Belgium plant, B for the Basildon UK plant or C for the US assembly plant, up until they moved all final assembly to Basildon, and when they ran out of 6 digit numbers for the B code, they added a second letter, first BA, then BB, then BC, etc., but all tractor numbers (serial numbers) that start with B were assembled at Basindon whether they are single or double letters.

There are 2 engine code letters, the one in the model number and the letter at the beginning of the engine serial number. The engine code in the model number would indicate whether it was a gas or diesel, and whether it was a vertical or horizontal exhaust in some cases. Some were also specific to emmissionized vs. non-emmissionized engines.

The letter at the beginning of the ngine serial number indicates which tractor series the engine was assembled for. Prior to 4/1/68, the engine serial number started with L for the 2000 series, N for the 3000 series, P for the 4000 series and R for the 5000 series. On 4/1/68 they switched to B for the 2xxx series, C for the 3xxx series, D for the 4xxx series and E for the 5xxx/6xxx series. The engine serial numbers started with the same letter as the series letter at the beginning of the model number for all models from that date forward. So you can generally figure out the engine displacement based on the series, but there were a few oddball models within series over the years that did not have the same displacement as the majority of models within the same series for the same time period.
