Ford4630 just stopped

I was mowing with my Ford 4630 and the engine just quit. When I turned the key to restart, nothing happened. The battery is good, there was plenty of diesel and the gear shifters were in the neutral position for restart. This happened to me several years ago and it turned out a mouse had eaten the wire going to the fuel solenoid. I tried to check the fuse, but my manual has a different fuse configuration. Can someone direct me to the correct fuse location? Also, does anyone know the color code for the wire to the solenoid? Any other suggestions?

To make sure we understand, when you try to restart, does the engine crank over, but does not run??? Or, are you saying it does not crank over??? Remember that you must turn the pto to "OFF" or it will not crank over and gear shift must be in neutral, even the high/low/shuttle. A volt meter used to measure for 12 volts at the fuel solenoid on the injector pump, while the key is on, would go a long ways if you think its not getting fuel. A dead battery or a bad fuseable link will also make it shut down with an electric fuel cutoff selenoid..... thus no lights, cranking or running.

Thanks for the reply. The pto is off. Also the engine does not crank when I try to start. The gauges turn of when I turn the key switch. I will check the voltage at the fuel solenoid.

Thanks for the suggestion, but I’m not sure a battery issue would stop a diesel engine from running. I will check to make sure.
If.. it has the electric fuel cutoff solenoid, they YES, the battery would cause it to shut down. GO back.. when you turn on the key, do the dash lights come on? And then does it crank over but not run???

Not familiar with the 4630. On my older Fords, the safety switch in the transmission gets worn out over time and you have to jiggle the shifting handle on top of the tranny to find the sweet spot most of the time. What happens is that over time the connecting points wear down and the lever doesn't push the button down on the top of the switch far enough to activate it. I have replaced the switch in the past and had to add an additional flat washer to get the gap tight enough to engage when required.

Here's an old post I found:

"The key switch circuit runs from the switch, down through the transmission safety switch, then through a PTO safety switch on the PTO lever and then up into the fuse panel where it controls that relay. Check to see if you have power in the relay control circuit and the switched line of the relay.
I'd bet on a bad safety switch if I only had one guess....."

Tell you what: look at the tranny cover and find the two wires that go through it. Disconnect them and somehow.....inserting a short piece of conductive wire that will make good contact, connect the wires together (will work) , GET INTO THE SEAT and attempt to start the tractor. If it rolls over (doesn't have to start), you found your "smoking gun".......the safety switch in the transmission.

Sounds like you are having 2 separate issues as the no crank issue shouldn’t have any effect on the sudden shutdown issue
On yours did the engine shut down when you turned the key off or does in have a knob you have to pull out to stop the engine
If it shut off with the key the fuel solenoid on the pump has likely failed and was a common issue with those models
As for the no crank issue that can be neutral safety switch in the transmission, pto safety switch, fuse, start relay or loose wire, I’ve had the starter activation wire vibrate off the starter terminal
Apparently the 3930/4630 models use up to 3 different fuse boxes during its production, I have a 90 model in for a clutch job that has a different fuse boxes from the 94 model I parted out which was different from a neighbors 98 model
Do to this it’s hard the say which fuse operates the start circuit, I generally just pull one fuse at a time checking to see if it’s blown, then replace or reinstall and move to the next, it doesn’t take that long and rarely does the relay fail

All of these suggestions are very helpful. I will follow through and let you know the results. It will take a few weeks because I am away from that farm at this time
