Fords with IH engines

Today I was at the parts store getting gaskets and seals for this NAA that WILL NOT LEAK when I'm done with it. The parts man was thumbing through the parts book looking for a rear seal and he found an IH engine listed, but we were confused as to whether it was the 138 (I think) or the 172. Both of us were surprised when IH was listed in the book. In the box of parts the owner sent with the tractor was a neoprene rear seal in a CNH parts bag and it appeared to be the right seal for this NAA. So, did IH make an engine that was put in a Ford tractor? There must have been come kind of connection with the two companies. Jim

CNH bag doesn't mean anything. CNH is the merger of New Holland and Case IH. New Holland is what was Ford. Therefore CNH is the provider of both IH and Ford OEM parts.

The 134 and 172 were both definitely Ford engines. The only IH or Navistar engine I'm aware of in a Ford is the diesel engine in Ford pickups from about '83 - '10.

Ford, New Holland, CIH makes sense. Didn't even enter my mind. The thought I had was a couple of brands of tractors could use the same seal. This could possibly be what the parts book was telling us. Jim

There are many instances where Ford and IH stuff use the same parts... and their original part numbers sub up to one common CNH part number... but Ford most certainly did not use any IH engines in their ag line. Pickup trucks... yes. Ag/construction... no.
IH did use the 172 engine in some of their old skidders tho..
