Found in the woods

I was down off a bluff this weekend, looking at a blown down oak to see if I could recover it for firewood. I almost literally stumbled over this.

Better than finding it in a tractor tire.Early in the Spring I look for shed deer antlers where the deer cross my hay fields, usually find a some.Guess that deer was maybe shot and never found.

Strange I guess it all depends one where one is. Living here surrounded on three sides by refuge we find a lots of that kind of stuff. I would say full skull like that one more than one a year and just natural sheds no telling how many.

I found one like that in the mountains of Arizona a few years ago, and I left it there. A year later it was gone, it looked like someone on
horseback had taken it.

I'm suprised it survied intact. My grandson removed flesh and skin off a head then hung it in a
tree to dry. Dogs, cats and varmints stayed after it day and night.

Rodents chew them up quickly around here.
This one has been hanging in the tree for
years though.

Here in central Washington lots of people go out in spring looking for elk sheds. bonus if you find the both sides of a rack. They sell for lots of money.
