Freeze plug removal

Dieselsmoke

I have my Dad's 8N running after it "resting" for about 16 years. What a process. But now a little drip from left side, of coarse directly under the starter. I pulled the starter for a look and thin metal under the painted freeze plug, probe with a flat blade and now it's a dime sized hole. So is the best way to pull it with a slide hammer or drive it in with a socket? Can i get a new one from NAPA? thanks in advance. DS

If you can it is always better to pull it out not push it in since once inside your not going to be able to pull it back out and the old piece will be in the water jacket and could cause problems later down the road. So yep the slide hammer is the better way to go if you do get it out that way

Dieselsmoke,Just pop your old rusred welch plugs out by knockin a hole in the center of them with a old screwdriver and hammer and just pry them out.If one is bad you just as well change them all.Clean the grove up where they seat in the block, and use a little permatex, aviation sealer on the block seats and install the new ones.Welch (“Freeze”) plugs, Ford p/n 353454-S, 1-3/16” NAPA 219-1021 from NAPA.I have used a Kennedy .50 cent piece in the past in a pinch(they won't rust away in a lifetime copper you know) I use two ball pien hammers to seat the plugs, dimple the concave a little then try to make them flat.Yoy may wan't to flush all the gunk out of the block with a hose while you have them all out!

I hear ya. My gut tells me that if the one is bad the others are almost gone. I will replace the left side's first. Flush her out and replace the coolant. This old girl needs rear seals and brakes, bad. So It's coming to my place where I have all my tools, aircompresser, woodstove, and lights. It now rests at my Dad's place, in a tool shed, not my favorite place for extended repairs. Its A work in progress. thanks DS.

Success, the old one's out and replaced with a NAPA #1021, thanks Den. the nineteen year old counter-guy didn't have any cross ref. guides for tractors. I gave the other three a tap test, and passed. they sounded solid. Flushed the block till clear water showed. I buttoned her up so next dry day I need to haul wood the tractor will be ready.
