Fridge problem

I just picked up a used Maytag fridge for the basement, had it in the garage and it was working in the garage. It was carried down to the basement and now won't cool or freeze. It makes a sound like it's running but no cooling. What needs to be checked out before I scrap it?

did you lay it down if so set it up right for 12 hr, then plug in oil needs to drain down never lay them down

Really shooting from left field here, but what do you expect
if you post about a refrigerator and on a tractor forum. I
would web search the problem giving brand and model
number. If that gives you nothing, I would look up repair
parts for it again giving make and model number. See if
there is a fan that circulates air from the freezer to the
fridge, this is the way most of them maintain the refrigerator
temp by adding air from the freezer section. But since it is
not freezing in that freezer section that could be a futile
approach. Is it new enough to have a digital temp read out?
Most refrigerators that have that have a controller board.
Could be possible that the wiring for it possibly got pulled
loose, maybe on the back of it? Now to the simplest
possible fix. Leave it unplugged for 6 - 8 hours and try it
might do it. Best this tractor guy can do for you on an
appliance.

Was it strapped to a utility cart or 2 guys carried it?

If it was carried, possible you pulled on a pipe and broke a freon line.

If compressor is vibration, it running. No cooling you have a problem
Could also be in a defrost mode. Give it an hour or two and see if it works.

IF not, time to get another one.

See if the compressor came off the springs. Sounds like it is running? Put your hand on it and see for sure! Hope you did not lay it down. If you did leave it upright, as mentioned before, and try it tomorrow. If you can't figure it out, you can always put a light bulb in it and keep welding rods in it to keep them warm and dry.

Not knowing the age if it is a self
defrost it will have a fan in the
freezer. If it does is it running? If not
it won't get cold.

Look at the refrigerant lines near the compressor. If someone has added a charge port, there is a
refrigerant leak. Probably 2 leaks, the original leak and the charge port! If that's been done, it
probably done for unless you can find and repair the leak.

Is the compressor vibrating, or just getting hot? If it's heating up and tripping out, not actually
running, the start relay is probably bad. It's clipped on to the motor terminals under the cover.

If the compressor is running, getting warm, and no cooling, no heat on the condenser coils, the
system is out of refrigerant or the compressor valves are bad, or ???

C'mon Red, guys ask legal and medical advice here all the time and get better answers they do from their lawyers or doctors. This site is absolutely plum full of experts on every topics known to mankind, and I happen to be one of them. That being said, my advice would be to bite the bullet and buy a new fridge.

Not knowing exactly what style of fridge you are asking about but will take a stab at diagnosing you problem. I doubt that its anything but a self defrosting
unit. Is the fan in freezer section running? If not and the compressor in the lower back is then the evaporator fan motor is bad-just replace that. If the fan
is running but the compressor isn't then yes the relay on the compressor is probably bad. That is an issue that Maytag had on certain units. Especially side by
side refrigerators. If both the evaporator fan motor and compressor are running but you aren't getting any cooling then yes the unit is out of refrigerant and
it really isn't worth fixing. If it is a unit with the freezer on the bottom then it is probably a dual evaporator unit and the evaporator in the fridge section
needs to be replaced. That also is a known problem with Maytag units. The cost would be rather expensive. This coming from an old retired certified service

Thanks for the comments. It was carried down to the basement and it was at about a 45 degree angle. I have let it sit for a day and tried again, but still no cooling.
Here is what I'm now noticing. The compressor dome (large circle in pic) is very hot and there is a clicking sound periodically at the start relay (small circle), and so as Steve@Advance mentioned, that is likely the problem. The only thing running is the fan, in second pic.

Take the relay/combination overload off of the compressor and shake it. If it sounds like sand inside it then it is bad. Replace it and cross your fingers. Tom
