Front bolster pin

Anyone know what the drilled hole is for in the front support pin for the front axle for the 5000-7610
series tractors? As you can see, the tractor I'm working on broke the pin in half right where the hole is;
first I've ever seen of that kind of failure. I'm frankly surprised that the front axle did not fall out.

Pic below shows the bolster laying upside down.

The one I drove out would have never came out with a punch set on an angle. I had to lay the bolster on the ground just like you see it and smack it directly with a pretty big hammer. It gave me a fight!

That pin fits dozens of tractor models and thinking the hole may serve a purpose, such as a grease passage, on a specific model so production drilled them all. Just a WAG.
