Front engine seal 1945 2N

When running, it drips a good sized drop about once per second. The front seal area is very greasy / oily. I have my front axle out anyway but haven't dug any deeper. I really do not want to drop the pan right now. Any less invasive solutions or tricks in this area? Can I pull a timing cover and attack from above?

RugHead.......the flathead V-8 boys found a better solution. A 1-piece neoprene seal. NAPA #550199 (40x62x11) I don't remember all the installation details but yeah, you'll haffta drop yer oilpan a little bit to remove the leaking rope seals top'n'bottom. Do a "search" at the top of this great N-Board. There's pictures on how to do it. ........Dell

It is possible that the seal itself is not what is leaking. It could be the pan gasket where it bolts to the timing cover. There are two or three bolts that go into the soft aluminum timing cover and I've run into lots of them over the years where someone has stripped out the aluminum threads in the timing cover. The front pulley has to be removed to get to these bolts. If it is the gasket leaking I would try cleaning the area really good and dry with brake cleaner and then apply JB Weld to the area that you ssupect is leaking around the pan to timing cover gasket area.

Aluminum timing cover on a 2N? I thought only side mount distributor 8Ns have an aluminum timing cover.

You may be right but I thought that the aluminum timing cover came out some time before the side mount distributor????

I don't think so. I've never seen an aluminum timing cover for a front mount distributor. They were all cast iron as far as I know.

I would clean that front end up and find out were the oil is coming from. If it is the pan, go ahead and drop it and regasket and bearing seals. You have the hardest part done in removing the front axle. If you paste something on the gasket or pan and it doesn't work, you got all this to do over.
