Front Engine Seal on 641

How involved is the replacement of a front engine seal on a 641? I have the radiator and sheet metal off now to replace the water pump (broken off bolt)and would like to replace the seal now due to excessive leakage. Are any special tools required? Any help appreciated.

Replacing the seal is not difficult at all. Just pull the pulley, disconnect the governor and remove the cover. Knock out the seal from the back and install new seal. You can use a flat peice of wood to seat the seal, or if you have a socket the same diameter of the seal us it. Now would be a good time to replace the seal for the governor arm shaft and check out the governor itself. Look for flat spots on the rollers. Hope this helps.

Does the deisel version of the 641 also have a governor?

On the diesel the governor is in the injection pump.

OK, that makes sense. Does the whole front end including the wheels need to be removed in order to access the front crankshaft seal?

I've never replaced the front seal except while rebuilding the engine. If you've got the radiator out should be easy enough to see if you can get the pulley off now, then you should be able to get front cover off. Watch for wear on the seal surface of the pulley, may have to get a new hub or speedi sleeve it if there is too much of a groove wore into it.

There is a big frame piece that attaches to the front steering mechanism that is directly in front of the pulley.

I would guess it's time to roll the front end away then, you are almost there any way if you've got the tin and radiator off now. Just need to block it up under the bell housing and should have the front end off in no time.

Just as well roll the front end away and make all the room you need. So much time is wasted by doing stuff the hard way. Would be a good time to replace the front axle pivot pin and bushing.

Yeah good point. Watched a video of a guy and his was completely worn out no threads left. Hope mine isn't that bad.
