Front hub grease seal ?

New here, been diving in deep to the front 1/2 finally on my '50 N... Doin the photo thing and got the I&T along with a republished manual... but cant find a good photo or remember which way to put the grease seal back in on the hub, rubber side towards the motor, or rubber towards the race/bearing.

Supposed to pick up the motor from the machine shop today if it's done. crank - .020, polished cam, new .090 sleeves etc, speede sleeve the front pulley... new valve job... and the list goes on.

Probably run across more that I've forgotten as I get into it!... Does anyone have a pdf file with the really good blow ups of the parts? the parts manual is one I should just break down and order too.

This is not a grease seal - it is a dust seal. Because of this - the rubber side goes towards the spindle (engine) and the metal side goes against the bearing/cup.

IF he has the OEM-style seal, and NOT a generic replacement oil seal!

There was a loooong discussion on the other board last week about this very question, prompted by my tip # 2, below. The OEM seal was a dust seal, not a grease seal & it is correctly installed w/ the rubber to the spindle. If it were indeed a grease seal, then the rubber would go toward the bearings. (It didn't help that I refer to it as a 'grease' seal) Anyway, it seems that Tisco is making an seal that does look like a grease seal. So, it depends on what you have, but, IMHO, it was designed as a dust seal & seems to have worked well for 60+ years, so I plan to use the OEM dust seal. I've replaced them on two of my three N's & installed them as I was told to do by the Ford/NH folks 10 years ago: rubber to the spindle, because it is a dust seal.

Be sure to put some grease on the rubber...or you'll have to do like me and listen to it squeal for a while.

Thanks for the help, got them both back together rubber side out, they came from external_link and looked like what was left of the ones that came out.
