I am putting together the front hubs on a 1951TO-30 and was wondering if anyone has seen this. The hubs are original and the axle is new, aftermarket one. Everything is tight like it should be but there is a gap between the hub and the axle housing. It just seems weird.

Ford had axle seals installed inside out. The theory being not to keep the grease in, but keep the dirt out.
If your '30 has a zerk on the hub, you might be able to locate a seal to install in there. If no zerk, you could install one and incorporate Ford thinking.
A simple felt seal might not handle the rotation too well.

It has some type of seal that is just behind the inner bearing but it s located about a quarter inch past that opening. I bought the bearing kit from this site and that seal came with it. I put it right next to the bearing thinking it would help keep the grease in. I could slide the seal back more where it is flush with the edge of the hub. I just did not know what would be better for holding the grease to the bearing. If I push the seal back it would be about 1/4 to 3/8 in away from the bearing

My opinion, something is wrong. Look at the other side.
Spindle machined wrong, bearing should slide on farther??

And yes that is the bearing kit I purchased. I m thinking that I might just need to move that seal out some or maybe it won t hurt to leave it where it is.

The bearings are set in place and the axle nut lines up perfect with the cotter pin hole. If the hub slid in any further the nut would be off. It is weird but there is a solution out there. I changed both axles and they look the same. Wish I could find some pictures of other to-30 s axles after a replacement.

Look at this. Click on photo to enlarge. Looks different than yours I think.

Doesn't look right to me either.

Is the seal running on the surface where it should?

That's going to be an open invitation for grass to get wound in there and ruin the seal.

It looks like you are missing the seal, part number 180 008m1. It goes on the axle first then the hub assembly.

What Tom h, said, is the way I read in the shop manual. The seal goes on the axle first, then the hub.

Here are some pictures of what I have. The bearing, race, and seal came in a kit from yesterday s tractor and the axle came from eBay the hubs do measure different heights from the inner side to the flange. Also, does the rubber go towards the bearing or away?

Is your seal even with the back side of the hub? On everything they are supposed to be. Got rid of my TO-30 back in 69 so don't remember anthing about that from there. I have worked on a lot of wheel bearings and on car-truck front axles plus other inplements and that seal is never tight to bearing but even with back side of hub. Just fill the gap with more grease, sounds like you have not put enough grease in there.

your inside bearing is not on the spindle all the way in one shot you can see the bearing is not in as far as it should be clean it up and dry fit it bearing should slide on by hand and bottom out on the seal surface kind of looks like your spindle is not machined quite right .your bearing should NOT stick to the spindle. grease up your bearing put it in hub and press seal in it should slide on spindle and pull back off with out the bearing and seal pulling out of hub

I will post some other pictures this evening but the seal was against the bearing in that shot. It can be moved against the axle housing but it will not sit all the way flush due to the milling of the axle. Which way does the seal sit in there, rubber facing the bearing or rubber facing the axle?

Here are some pictures of the seal. I can slide the seal back but the silver part will still show. The seal will be almost flush with the end of the hub. Wonder if it is the aftermarket axle and the new bearings?

I think you should contact Y.T. parts and send your photos to them. It looks like those spindles aren't machined right.

Here is some of the pictures I took. The factory axle is .07 wider on the shoulder where the inner seal is. Other than that it measures the same. A bit confused but what else to do? I put the hub on the old axle and it had a slightly smaller gap but still a gap. Thoughts
