Aaron,

Recently purchased items from your store to rebuild the right front knuckle on my 1301D. I ordered the parts from the parts manual that you supplied for my tractor. The rebuild went well with the exception of trying to get the seal to seat on the lower housing. There is a gap between the upper and lower housings. Does the new gear and bearings have to be pressed onto the King pin? I checked the stack height of the bearing and it is fine however I no longer have the old double bevel gear to compare the new one with. I posted to tractorbynet and supplied some images. Any advice or help would be appreciated.
Thanks R. Neill

Thank you for your order. The bearings & gear should never be "pressed" on. You will easily damage the tiny needle bearings inside. What we do is install the bearings into the gear & then roll the gear while pushing down & it will practically screw itself onto the kingpin & will align the bearings in the process.

I saw your TBN post but did not really have a quick solution. That whole assembly is very tricky to get just right & if you don't get it right the gears will not mesh correctly. The shims that are shown in he illustration are "as needed" type things & you can use as many as you need. If all models need exactly that amount of shims they would just make the gear longer, etc. It sounds to me like you may just need to remove/add shims to get it all just right. You should also look at some gear mesh paint so that you can see if you have the mesh correct.

The above article is for a rear axle ring & pinion gear but when you think about it- you are really trying to set 2 ring & pinion gears inside of that 1 housing. It will take some time to get it all right but once it is done you wont need to ever do it again.

If you still have problems, you can send the whole side in to us & we can set it up for you.

Good luck!

Thanks Aaron, I removed some shims and the gears look like they mesh nicely. Is there an accepted gap between the upper and lower housings?
As a result of removing some spacers and shims the housings are closer but I still have approximately 1/4 of an inch or less between them. Will the seal do its job if it is not completely resting on the lower housing?
Thanks

As long as everything else is ok in the gearbox, a small gap between the two is ok in my opinion. I looked at several wore out original housings and many have the seal wear groves near the outside- suggesting that they had a gap between the housings also. I think you will be ok as long as the gear mesh is ok & everything feels tight.

Thanks Aaron,

I'll give it a try. Everything looks good as far as the gears go.
I would imagine in time the spacers and shims will wear closing the distance on the housings. <E>:D</E>
