Front loader question

So I've learned everything I know about tractors in the past week LOL.

Have a 40 9N, ran across a local guy selling a Skyline by Davis front loader complete with everything for $200. Thing is it came off a 8N, think it'll fit my 9N ?

Thanks!!

It'll fit. The real question is, do you really want it? Ns are sturdy little tractors, but front end loaders are pretty hard on them. The front end (king pin, axle support, etc) is kind of weak, and they experience a lot of wear when using a loader.

I've never had a loader on mine, so I don't have personal experience with it. I do know of several people who had loaders and took them off, because they made the tractor difficult to steer and awkward to drive around.

On the other hand, I think $200 is a pretty good deal, especially if it comes with the pump and hoses, etc. I guess it all boils down to how you will use your tractor.

I have a boom pole for lifting stuff, and a rear scoop for digging stuff.

I have a FEL on my 2N and it's pretty handy sometimes. It does take a toll on the pivot pin and the front end in general. It is also a good arm workout to turn with a full bucket but for $200.00 it is a good attachment to have. I use mine for hauling brush (draped over the arms) and cut wood in the bucket as well as general light duty excavating. I do take it off sometimes when I know I won't use it for a while. It's been off for almost 2 years now but it's there if I need it.

Make sure you are getting a hydraulic pump with the loader. If not that $200 moves up to $500/$600 pretty quickly.

should fit.

how's it plumbed?

what do you intend to use it for? powered wheel barrow? ( not too bad of use.. )

I'll simply add to what the others have said that it should fit. However there are some diffrences in the front axle support between a 9N and an 8N that might be an issue. In particular the front axle pivot pin on the 8N is .375" shorter that the one used on the 8N. So if the front hanger for the loader is one of the triangular plates/axle pin welded assemblies that won't interchange. And if the 9N has the early style support with riveted radiator/dogleg bracket the rivet heads may interfere with the later style bolt on hanger. Post somepics of the loader and the front of the 9N and I might be able to speak with greater certainty.

And do be sure and get all the hydraulic components including the pump, drive shaft/hub, and control valve.

PS> I just noticed that you said 40 9N - the front support is almost surely the older two piece riveted assembly.

My 8N is set up with a Farm Hand FEL. I ran it pretty hard over the weekend, moving heavy clay soil. I ran into my wife's car, my back and arms feel like I was trampled by horses, but I'll tell ya - beats the heck outta the wooden handle!

Just another opinion to add to the pile... I have a '50 8N which I restored last year, and use it to farm about 10-12 acres (depending on whether you count mowing the pasture). It's about the handiest tool I have in the barn, and the list of implements I have keeps growing.

I do have a Dearborn FEL with a manure bucket, which would be handy in mucking out the barn, but after giving it a lot of thought, decided against mounting it. The loss in maneuverability when using all my other implements, plus extra wear and tear pretty much outweigh any benefit I'd get. Not to mention, I'd loose the ability to hitch a hay rack to the front and drive it in the barn backwards (I still can't back one to save my life).

Another N isn't in the budget, but if I were to get another tractor, it would definitely have a bucket on it.

I recently installed a Dearborn 19-22 on my 8-N.
Between YT and TOH, I finally made it work. The worst thing about it is climbing over the pipes to get on and off. It does not seem to be hard to steer and has been good for moving and digging rocks. Some as large as a wash tub. I have to get off to push rocks into the bucket--otherwise they just run along in front. It"s been good for reducing my big belly.

Thanks everyone for the replies. As luck would have it I got buried in work and by the time I called the guy back (tuesday, didn't get home till 9 monday), it was sold.

Not complaining, in this economy I'm just glad to be working.

Thanks again, Kevin
