Front Loader Seals - Model 40 Loader on MF 165

A cylinder on my Model 40 loader was leaking slightly so I decided to replace the seals.

I can't find any info about this job, but decided to start anyway.

I managed to get the seals from an MF dealer. Part number 1853197 M1.

I expected that the carrier for the inner, outer and wiper seals was screwed together and could be taken apart, but this does not seem to be the case.

Getting the old seals out was tricky, but putting the new ones in seems impossible.

Does anybody know how to do this ?

Mike.

Just slide it into groove at angle push it in as far as it will go into slot then use screwdriver and fold it a bit and pop rest of it in
They make a tool but never used them

I was eying that tool after I reused a spiral backup ring instead of using the new solid ring on a piston with really sharp edges. It seemed like the edge of the piston was going to cut the solid back up ring no matter what I tried.

When you do this, use a round-shaft screwdriver, like a small phillips or a round drift punch. It doesn't have any sharp edges to nick your seal.

Thanks for the answer damn1981. Let's me know I'm trying to use the correct technique. However "just slide it in and pop the rest in" doesn't seem to apply. Too much material and pretty stiff. It's a tight fit to get the first side in and when I try to push the other side in it twists and instead of going in the slot it pops out the other side.
After a few attempts, the lower rubber pressure side is starting to separate from the rubberized webbing/canvas of the top half. Maybe that would then be easier to fit.?!? (And would work just as well?)
The new seal (original MF part.) is more than 11 mm whereas the old seal was just 9, It looks like most of the rubberizes part on the old one has worn away? Or was removed!?
How does the tool work.? Would a hydraulic workshop have such a tool.?

One example.

Seal tools

I agree the seal is too thick.
I split it into its component parts and fitted the rubber part of the seal easily. Is now almost flush with the gland.
The remainder of the slot is now 3mm and the remaining seal part is 4mm.
So now the decision to try to make the backup part thinner or fabricate a new ( nylon ? ) backup ring.?

The top one is just a wiper was it any good
Also what loader is on that. is like no gland I have seen on a Massey industrial loader unless they found an aftermarket cylinder

The two parts I now have are both part of the main seal. A bit like a combined rubber ring and (teflon) backup ring on the stack pipe?
The wiper fits in the top slot (see photo) and has a separate part number. See drawing for numbers. Measurements are not 100% accurate.

The Loader is a Model 40. Standard loader for a UK MF 165.

Cool do you have oring seal place close to you
Could take it there and get seals amazing that thing is older then me and looks better

By slightly modifying the hard part of the seal, I managed to get it fitted and it works fine and stays dry.
The type plate (in the photo) was removed by the previous owner for painting, and I can't find the old holes.
Does anyone know where the type plate goes.? A photo would be ideal.
