Front seal leaking -- Super A

I have an opportunity to pick up a Super A. Two items that I saw when view the machine are:
1--front seal (not sure what seal) is leaking quite a bit. Drips down from where I believe hand crank opening is. How difficult is it to replace that seal? Would I need to remove the front axle?
2--the steering is really loose; need a little over 1/2 a turn on the steering wheel before the front tires turn. Is the steering shaft with worm gear and bearing readily available? If that does not correct the steering problem, are the parts to rework the steering box readily available? Would I need to remove the front axle from the tractor?

The only other issue the engine smokes little at startup but clears up and runs strong after a minute or so. Everything else on the machine is in what appears to be good working order.

Not familiar with Farmall's and would not have the resources to remove the front axle.

1. I think that is the front crankshaft. seal you have to remove the front axle (I believe, correct me if I'm wrong.) to replace it, along with the radiator and front cowl.
2. I can't help with that.

The front of the tractor needs to come off from the engine block forward, including the axle and casting. The seal is inside the front cover. The pulley is a heavy press fit and takes a bearing splitter, and a heavy two jaw puller and usually propane heat to warm the pulley at the crank snout. The oil smoke is due to the engine not having oil seals on the valve stems (none were ever on it from the factory) ignore that. The steering issues can be repaired while the front is off! there are bushings and ball bearings that are likely suspects in the excess play. Jim

Thanks for information. Kinda thought the front end would need to come out. The search will continue.

There are kits available to rebuild the steering if you decide to do that.

Check where the steering box output shaft meets the gizzy that
turns the tie rods. Quite often that is where the most play occurs.
You probably are aware that the pulley is a bear to get off.
