front tire treads

Hi guy's ,got a question about tire treads ,I blew the side out of one of mine the other night plowing snow ..dropped em off at the tire place to get new ones put on as both were showing lots of weather rot..

WEll old tires were three ring ,big ol center tread and ones they put on are small threads..Mostly I'm plowing snow with front homemade plow and even with old tires she didn't steer to well ,used back breaks allot ,I'm thinking these new tires are gonna be even worse ..
I didn't get top see tires before they were on ,,and took em home last night cause I thought I was gonna need em to plow with ..well we got rain so no need .I'm now thinking I want the old treads ...
Probably gonna cost me to reinstall as it was my mistake not looking before I bought ,so am I gonna be cursing these new tires for the next 5 years or should I bite the bullet and get the big luggers???

If the new ones are like the ones I saw in your insert, they're plain old flotation tires and they will slide all over the place. I tried that once on the loader tractor. One of the old three rib's blew out so I put on a set of used flotations that I had on hand. I was on the brakes all the time trying to turn that thing in the wet cattleyards. Jim

If you have power steering and only plow snow not fields I would put a good set of truck tires on it. they have more tread on the ground for turning on hard surface but will make it steer like a tank if no power steering.

On the other hand, I have implement tires on the front of my D19. They don't tear up the turf near as much when turning with a shredder.

Take them back and have them put on a new set of three ribs. It shouldn't cost you anything except the difference in the price of the tires.

Couldn't get the picture up when I looked at the site, so I'm a little hestitant to suggest........they're probably the 'new' 4-rib rather than the old three rib. 4-rib's pretty much all that's used around "here" by farmers.

Go with the 3 rib or you'll wish you had.

Three ribs around here. The four ribs leave less of a mark in the ground when spraying, spreading etc. However they don't turn worth beans in mud, snow or slop without using the wheel brakes.

Could never really decide which I liked better; had both kinds when I quit farming. Always kept 2 tractors with loaders w/hay forks. Don't know that I could tell any difference (4-rib had about 1 1/2 inch deep rib/bite). We get very little snow, but deal with a LOT of mud. Three rib are pretty much special order around here..........

Go back and get the 3 rib. I cannot imagine I would ever buy tires without having the roll one out for me to inspect before they started mounting. When I have ordered, I always go the mfg site and see product ahead of time. Never buy in the dark. Tire stores will try to get rid of their junk on customers that dont get into details. Tom

If the pic of the new tire is what you actually got then take them back as they are not steer tires. Those are implement tires. If they are the four rib as opposed to the tri ribs don't worry about it. In all actuality the quad ribs should steer better since they have an extra rib with an extra fact to push against. We have both and you can't tell the difference really... all in your head! Some just can't accept change, ha ha.

Some years back I bought a parts swather that had a 16 inch ag lug tire for drive tires. same pattern as a rear tractor tire. When I needed to put new fronts on the 706 I thought that would be a good time to use them. Long story short, That was the best tread design for a tractor front that I have ever used. When I ever replace fronts on a tractor again that is what I will get unless they are really high priced.

If that picture is right and their not a 4 rib design, take'em back, chew them a new one for being so dense, and get either a 4 rib or 3 rib FRONT TRACTOR tire. Implement tires may be alright for a lawn mowing rig, but won't steer for crap.

In my opinion, I can't really tell a difference between a 3 rib and 4 rib tire, we've got both on our farm and both steer just fine in similar conditions. In loose soil, they both need brakes to help bring it around.
