Front Wheels

The front wheels of my '52 8N have twelve lug holes and four more holes closer to the outside of the rim.

Why twelve rather than six lug holes and are the four additional holes for weights or something?

Thanks.

The 12 lug holes are the original style used for reversing wheels to obtain wider stances as in the widest stance for cultivation of two rows. Take a close look, 6 holes are flanged for the wheel nuts on the front and six are flanged on the back side so they may be properly reversed. All 1952's came from the factory with light duty rims and 5.50X16" tires. The same rims were optional on 8N's pror to 1952 as were the heavier rims with 6.00X16" from about 1949 on.

There was a time that reversing the rims was used to change the track to wider even after moving the axle out. If you look at the holes they are tapered, 6 on one side, 6 on the other.
Our rear wheel dishes of very thick metal have only 8 holes tapered on both sides.

Guy:

Others have already told you the purpose of the two sets of 6 wheel lug holes.

The other 4 holes are for mounting inside the wheel dish wheel weights.
