Froze up Oliver 1850

I was driving my Oliver 1850 down the road in high 6. As I was driving it started grinding in the gear and then the tractor basically acted like it down shifted. My wheels locked up and came to a complete stop. Now my tractor wont go into low gears. The tractor wont move. It will go into neutral and I can roll it but it wont drive. I checked to rear end oil and it was 9 gallons low. I was told to fill it up and try to break it free by idling it wide open and pop the clutch. Still no movement. Any ideas on what to try next without spending a lot of money or time on this tractor I'm already into more than it's worth?

Too easy, but I assume the chain coupler is still in place?

…Any ideas on what to try next without spending a lot of money or time on this tractor I'm already into more than it's worth?.. Medic I know you are fairly new to the forum but all I have for you in reply to the above is down the line of “hind site is 20/20” If you have a large investment in something make every effort to obtain the knowledge to maintain it PROPERLY! That means to NOT run the machine 9 gallons low on lube. Many on here have more invested in their tractor then it is worth. If you bought this tractor thinking it would be a “returning” investment you should have came here first and we could have saved you the effort. To fix this tractor the only thing to use on it is tools for its disassembly to find the problem. It is very likely going to be expensive, as alluded to above gears and shafts will probably need to be replaced. And finally whoever told you to try to break it free by popping the clutch with the engine wide open is AN IDIOT!! That is a very good way to increase the cost of repairing your machine by breaking additional parts. I would disregard future advice from that party.

Guess it is time to unload this tractor to someone else. Just make sure you tell them what you've told us. The first Advice from this forum is usually do you have an operators manual so you know about things like hydraulic oil, gear lube and engine oil where and how to check them. 9 gallons of 80w90 is cheaper when you only need to add a gallon. Oh well we have all had our own million dollar educations one breakdown at a time. gobble

Thankfully there are a bunch of these 1850s sitting behind barns with holes in the blocks. I would either try and find one for sale that has a bad engine and swap yours into it, or sell yours to someone who needs an engine.

I should note that the bad blocks are from the diesel engines not the gassers.

I think you are thinking of the 1855? The 1850 Diesel had the 354 Perkins and are a reliable engine. You are correct about swapping engine or a different back end though. Even though the front tub is different for the Perkins the bolt pattern were the tub bolts to the back end is the same as a number of 4 digit Olivers. OP didnt say if diesel or gas? Medic 52 - where did you check to see that it was 9 gallons low? I am thinking that must be close to the capacity so it must have been near empty? Must have a pretty serious leak? By your description of what happened It does sound like you are going to have to pull top off to have a look. If you are near central Ontario I have a parts tractor that you could bolt onto your front end?

Probably the easiest way out of this is check with salvage yards and get a complete rear end. Pull the motor, unbolt the frame and put it on the new rear end and then make sure it has oil in it.

My Sentiments exactyl,,.. ignorance has no excuse in the laws of Physics Either ,.. A good Oliver man would Know ,,. But if that happened to a big 30 series Case ,, Us Case guys would consider swapping rear ends at a salvage yard ..

Whoever told you to "clutch dump" the tractor to try to "fix" it is not your friend.
