fuel filter

The 3000 tractor I purchased ran good yesterday and this morning hogging the pasture. On way to house, it quit. Seemed like it ran out of fuel. Tank has about 5 inches on a stick. Fuel filter cover is covered with thick baked on dirt or grease. How do I change it and get diese to pump again? Tried to screw filter off, don't want to mess up anything. Ordered manuel but will have questions until it arrives.
Thanks,Tom

first, get rid of the dirt.. carb cleaner and a toothbrush and small screw driver and you should be able to clean it up.

now.. look under the filter element..should give you a clue as to how to remove it... assuming that you have the oem filter. you can check your master parts catalog for an exploded diagram of the fuel system to see how it comes apart as well... you can see this diagram at the parts/search page from the new holland web site.

don't overlook the possibility that it is a clogged fuel vap, vs a plugged fuel filter. while it could be the filter.. and it likely needs changing if you don't know it's age / hours... for the immediate issue of getting running.. and no fuel at the injector pump would be a clogged tank tap.. have had it happen on my ford diesels when the fitler screen melts or loads up.. etc.

The filter base has a bolt on top in the center.Takes a 7/16 wrench to turn it.It holds the filter between the top and bottom parts of the filter base.I would also check the fuel line between the filter base and the tank. The tank also has a filter screen on top of the fuel shutoff valve up inside the tank. Its a very common problem for this screen to clog up from dirty fuel.If you little or no flow from the supply line this screen is the culprit.I would also drain and flush the tank if that is the problem.
