Can anyone tell me the propper way to trouble shoot a fuel gage and float switch? I am getting 12 volts at the gage. How does a fuel gage even work? Thanks, Kyle

Disconnect the sender wire at the tank.

Gauge will PROBABLY read "Empty".

GROUND the wire. Gauge should move to "Full".

Some systems work just the opposite...

If gauge cycles from "Empty" to "Full". or "vice-versa" as you do this, the gauge and wiring to the tank are "OK", and it looks like a sender problem.

If the gauge DOESN'T move as you alternately ground and unground the wire at the sender, you have a gauge or wiring problem.

Some gauges have a ground wire, and some depend on making contact with a metal "dash" for ground. If ground wire is missing, or there's rust where the gauge mounts, that could be the problem, too.
