Fuel Gauge problem

1010 gas. Full tank, new sending unit, tried two different working gauges and tried moving sending unit around, but the gauge only barely goes above E. I have 12 volts getting to the gauge. What am I missing?

Ground the wire at the sending unit and see what the gauge does. Proper JD gauges to be used with that sending unit? JD sending unit?

Sending unit is from Steiner. Not sure on gauges. First I tried came off my parts tractor. "New" one is used off a 1020. Both read the same level.

Will add a ground wire tmrw.

You don?t need to run a ground wire. What Jim said is ground the wire from the sending unit. So take the wire that connects to the sending unit and touch it to a good ground. Needle on gauge should go to full that
will tell you if the gauge and wire is good. Sounds like you don?t have the correct sending unit to match the gauge.

Thanks Wisconsin Cowman, Sorry I wasn't clear.

If the gauge doesn't go full scale when the wire at the sending unit is grounded, then try grounding the sender terminal on the gauge. If it works then, you may have a bad wire between the gauge and sender.

It is not uncommon to get incorrect readings from gauges and sending units that are not specifically intended for each other and from the same manufacturer.

No dice. Gauge just went up to the same position it's been giving me, and the same position the other gauge I tried gave me.

What next?

Well it sounds like you got bad gauges? I would double check by
ohm the wire from the sending unit to the gauge. Also double check
that you have the wires connected right on the gauge.
