i bought a used lawn mower.one year old.it has a briggs engine.my wife was running it and it puffed a lot of black smoke.shut it off restarted and it ran.next day i checked the oil and the oil has gas in it.what's happening?

Either the float isn't working as it should or theres some dirt in the needle seat which is letting gas keep flowing when its shut off. Either one of those will cause you to have fuel in the oil and running it like that long will blow the engine

COMMON COMMON COMMON failure for a brigs carb.

The needles stick, carb floods, crankcase fills with oil.

Drain crankcase.. let it drip dry while fixing the carb.

Carb is SUPER easy to fix.. pull it off, drop the bole, get a can of carb cleaner.. remove float. pull sticky needle out. spray and wipe clean.. use q-tip to clean groove needle rides in, reasemble.. should be good till you let it set again.

I got rid of all of my gas equipment I dind't use at least every 3-4 months.

Small engine carbs can be a pain in the rear... ( 2cycle is usually fine due to the oil.. )

If she's gonna set.. run her near out of gas and then dump in fogging oil heavy into the tank.. run her till she starts smoking good.. shut off. Should be good for a year or two after that.. Drain tank, refill with gas.. prime her and go..
