Hello, I have a 49 8n. I am wanting to know if the engine will drain the tank dry. I am having trouble keeping the tractor running. starts and runs for about 10-15 seconds then dies. let it sit couple minutes and restarts with full choke for 10-15 seconds. I noticed that there was air bubbles in top of my sediment bowl. took the bulb off and opened the valve all the way(on reserve). It just barely drips out. There is gas in the tank but it is really low. I just cleaned the upper screen about 2 weeks ago when I had the tank boiled out. cleaned the elbow filter last sunday. Installed a new screen in the sediment bowl( I did not even know this one was supposed to be there.)yesterday. just wanting opinions on what may be wrong. Spark is blue. The whole dist, plugs and wires where replaced 2 weeks ago.Did not replace the coil. Sorry for the long post. Brian

If the tank is real low it could well your problem since it is almost impossible to get all the gas out of that tank even when you remove the sediment bowl assembly

Brian:

The condition that you describe is common and is caused by debris clogging the reserve port in the fuel valve.

The regular (non reserve) fuel flows through a stand pipe, and is therefore not prone to debris clogging.

The reserve opening is simply a port in the fuel valve inside the screen, which is open at the top. Floating debris in the fuel gets inside the screen when the fuel is run below the level of the standpipe and clogs the the reserve port.

The solution is to drain and thoroughly flush the tank and remove and clean the fuel valve.

had same problem with my 2n, cleaned the shutoff out and placed a screen for my gravity paint gun down inside the top of the shutoff screen. It was a snug fit, and it has run four yrs trouble free.
