hi all, someone told me that there isn't any difference between home heating oil and diesel fuel except for the color. is this a fuel story or a story for a fool?

Biggest difference is additive packages should be different. Many have run heating oil in diesels in the past (and still do). Also, you don't want to get caught with any red coloring in the diesel of an on road vehicle.

It’s the same stuff but depending on your supplier heating oil may not have the anti gel additives that off-road diesel will because these days nearly everyone’s tank is inside in a warm (or much warmer than outside anyway) basement. So if your running heating oil and it gets cold where you’re at you may have to run anti gel additive. Of course depending where you get your off-road and how often they turn over the tanks you may have to add it anyway.

Had a neighbor a bunch of years ago with several trucks as part of a small trucking company. He also had a heard of beef cows and almost at least one of every 2 cylinder JD tractor. Went by his house one day and everything was gone. When I asked him about it he said he decided to retire. Later found out he had been caught with home heating fuel from a different neighbor in his trucks. He had to sell everything to pay the fines.

Listen to what MCOhio Says he has it right. I have a couple buddies who deliver fuel to farms and homes they say the same thing.

just rebuilt the engine on the oliver 1650, including the injector pump and didn't want to ruin it. so it looks like aside from gel additives its alright to run with home heating oil.

The fuel you buy at the gas station would be ultra-low sulphur diesel. I doubt heating oil would be that same classification, even though it would likely work fine in older engines. I would not use heating oil in a modern, efi type engine.

I delivered liquid fuels for years. The only difference between heating oil and off road diesel, was the item code that I put in the computer before delivery.
That is exactly what our local driver told me many years ago. Except he didnt have a computer.

I also deliver fuel oil(heating oil). It is all low sulphur now . We can interchange when needed however diesel fuel contains additives such as anti-gel and lubricant additives. So yes it is pretty much the same product.

My supplier picks up fuel at the pipe line terminal himself. He has access 24/7 with a card. He can choose fuel oil or diesel fuel. The only difference is when he chooses diesel fuel an additive is injected into the line as he is loading. He does furnace work. He says the diesel fuel leaves a furnace so much cleaner that he prefers to use/sell diesel fuel for all purposes. The dye is also injected in off road fuel.
