Today I went to town, gas was $3.07 diesel was$3.89. I have some friends that farm probably four thousand acres row crop and hay, they just bought a new ford one ton V8 this year and a one ton power stroke the year before. According to their figures the power stroke is costing right at a hundred and fifty dollars more than the gas in fuel a month. They said that with the added expense of the diesel package and the cost of fuel it will never pencil out to beat the gas truck. I just thought that was interesting conversation. Also makes me wonder about tractors especially with this urea thing. Also why the big spread between gas and diesel?

Demand, enviromentalists and good old government regulation and taxation. Low sulphur standards imposed by the US govt. in 2008 excerbated already tight worldwide refining capacity, high worldwide demand, the federal tax is 6 cents per gallon higher than gasoline. Developing countries like China and India with little or non existent pollution laws use 3 times as much diesel as we do. No new refineries have built in 35 years in this country.

Hi way diesel has gone up to 4.23 at the corner store here.Gas is 3.50.A gallon of kerosene cost me 4.09.Our dollar is worthless.Watch food prices take off.

Would you believe that as low as our fuel prices are compared to yours that kerosene is six bucks a gallon

Hard to figure how they get along in most other countries where gas and fuel costs 3x what it does here.

seems like these new diesel pick ups are having alot of fuel/emmission problems also.

Ray, as I recall don't you use a J.D. two cylinder in your operation? What do you think of the fuel consumption for what you use it for? I am thinking if this spread is still on in the spring that I will pull my gas tractors in and tune them up and park my diesel small tractors for a while. I always liked using my poppers until the gas price made them cost prohibitive, besides, I always liked convertables...

There is nothing on my operation that even comes close to being as conservative on fuel as that JD two cylinder, not even that little Allis CA. I am with ya a hundred percent. I now do as much as I can with the small gas tractors. I even use that JD 60 to spread manure as much as I can even though it is a little small. Just bugs me using these big over powered tractors with todays fuel prices and maintenance on those.

It is funny, I keep thinking "Well, a diesel engine is roughly 30% more efficient than a gas engine, and the price spread is about 30%" .

Probably me just being a conspiracy theorist, but it is a rather handy idea.

Jet fuel is pretty much kerosene, and we commercially and militarily use alot of fuel that way. That, and there seems to be WAY more heavy truck traffic nowadays.

Maybe that is why the price spread? I would imagine there are alot of reasons.
