Fuel sending unit hardly working

Fuel sending unit on my ford 5200 seems to act weird
I didn't read anything on the gauge, but when I ground out the wire it reads full

I took the sebding unit out of the tank, and when i move it to full it reads full, when i slowly drop the float, the gauge also slowly moves, till just under full, then once i go down a touch more with the float, the gauge will drop to empty

Anyone that could tell me how to fix these sending units? Or are they a throwaway item?

A fuel sender is a engineering marvel you need to understand how it controls the ground. Trace the ground all the way to the sender level rod the rod that has the float on the end. I have posted pix of the circuit on the sender I can not find them at this time. It used a flexible copper braded type of wire the was al but broke. The other part of the circuit used a wiper that wipes across a wire wound circuit board. Its simple you can not overlook any part of it as all can be a possible problem. I found the post the sender may not be like yours but it should operate along the same lines. This one about beat me I kept ay it till I fixed it.

thanks! , I had a look at the link you posted, I think I might be better off to just order a new tank sensor, as I don't think it's worth several hours of my time to try fix a $120 sensor
