what is the best way to clean out light rust and trash out of the gas tank?

I've coated several with Red Kote. Follow instruction on the can.

Look for rusted through spots,then Fill with water to see invisible pin hole leaks.No holes get Kreem gas tank sealer kit and should be good to go. You could also take it to a machine shop and have it boiled then Kreem it. If it is rusted through replace it.

I had some tanks boiled out and sealed professionally by a local radiator shop. They are available for sale if you just want to replace it.
