It will fit with a lot of work. If you need a new tank you would be better served by buying the correct tank.
 
I believe the 801 gas tank will fit 601 tractor since the radiator support has a lower and a upper set of holes, and there are and upper and lower set of holes on the steering column on the 601, BUT you will need a dash (the piece with the gauges in it) from and 800/1 or 900/1 so the steering column hole will be in the right place.
