Fun With the Flathead

This old flathead 52 Merc is a real family fun machine. Recently got my nephew to run the Gopro camera on his quad while I drove the Merc for some high speed video. His dad, my brother, rebuilt the engine in the Merc back in the late seventies and has given quite a bit of help in getting this old family car back on the road.

High Speed Run in the Merc

I liked all the videos by roosty6. Thanks for sharing! :)

Seems like a comfortable ride in the Merc'. I don't know about that speed on a quad though. Although I do hit a hundred on my snowmobile from time to time.

I was humming "Hot Rod Lincoln" while watching. Thanks. By the way, have it on a 45 for those that know 45's.

Well I hate to give away a secret but the quad speedometer was only showing a bit over 80 km per hour. The camera always seems to make things look faster than reality. It was a comfortable speed and given enough open road I could likely get some much higher speed out of the old Merc.

(quoted from post at 18:49:29 06/28/16) Those old flatheads sounded great with dual glass packs
You bet they do. And maybe some day this one will too. But for now I'm happy with the full length straight pipe. Play this one on a good set of speakers. Its awesome! I had the camera mounted at the rear bumper so it picks up the sound really well.

And one of these days I want to put a video together with the sound track of Alan Jackson singing "Crazy Bout A Mercury". Because I am!

(quoted from post at 19:25:08 06/28/16) He sure did. :) Click the link for the song and many classic Mercury cars.
Mercury
Thats the one. I see they at least included one 1952 model. You never see much of the 52-54 body style cars and the 52 seems rarest of all. Thats ok though. This 52 is a piece of family history that has been with us since 1959 and that is worth a lot.

rusty6,

Both great videos. Interesting to see the suspension at work while you're cruising - neat perspective.

Driving over the camera was neat too (novel idea).

I think you have too much fun with that old Mercury. :)

I forgot to mention we had a '53 Maroon Mercury when I was growing up. Later on they called that color "burgandy".

Back in 52-53 that paint colour was known as "fanfare maroon" It was an option for the Lincoln as well.
