fused switch

Hi 1950 A the volt meter , hand held jumps all over when running, does the fused switch have any thing to do with this? Thanks Dave.

"does the fused switch have any thing to do with this"

MOST likely, NOT.

Is it keeping the battery charged?

The old generator systems were not as "stable" as modern electronically-controlled systems we are long used to, and often "back in the day" quality ammeters were "damped" to eliminate some of that flopping around.

There's some possible generator issues that will cause the Ammeter needle to flop around a bit, (brush or commutator problems, etc.), on the other hand, if it's keeping the battery charged that's GOOD, and even when new, the Ammeter needle probably "danced" a bit.

SORRY I didn't pay more attention to your original post, you said "VOLTmeter" and "handheld".

First of all, have you "polarized" the generator?

Are you using a digital meter? They are often confused by the ignition and charging system electrical "noise" on this older stuff. and read erratically, an analog meter is a better choice.

The switch grounds the generator field through a resistor for low charge, then fully grounds it for "high charge" or "lights on".

A good test of the generator would be to ground the "F"ield terminal at the generator, and read output voltage with an analog meter.

If it charges, does the cutout close and charge the battery?

This should help narrow it down to the generator, the switch, or the cutout.

The article linked below may be of some help.

Hi Am using analog meter. Thanks for the info, Didn't think the battery was bad. In warmer weather will check it out

I believe I have been polarizing it wrong, from your page. Will do that . Thank You for the post. 0 degree's in So MN Dave
